It might be totally unnecessary to make an edit on this one. The original is more than enough, but... but it was fun... and we kind of like to have fun with stuff.

Even if it was dropped some time ago, Max Tannone's mixtape MosDub is still worth mentioning. It's no less than a bomb! Trust us!

Almost (but only almost) as good as J Period's tribute to Q-tip (Really!) but musically maybe closer to the stuff that J-Star has been releasing for a while now (that "Passin' me by" version is still a huge favourite).

Free download here!

Pre-celebrating día de los muertos

October usally means a long wait for the celebration of el día de los muertos... too long for us actually, so we're already celebrating:) Collecting some nice shootings of all those mexican skeletons (check tiki.tv on Vimeo for one of the original videos selected) and mixing them up with our own little compilation of home made latin re-edits! The original cuts selected from the musical vaults of Colombia, Panama & Peru might not have too much to do, nor with Mexico or with Día de los muertos but they certainly get the party started:) Enjoy!

Tracklist:

1. Fire down below (K!K! Re-edit) - Lord Panama And The Stickers
2. Las calenas son como las flores (K!K! Re-edit) - The Latin Brothers
3. Dejala corre (K!K! Re-edit) - Banda Los Hijos De La Nina Luz
4. Cumbiamba (K!K! Re-edit) - El Sexteto Miramar

Enjoy!

Bonjay goes Caribou

It's become clear that Bonjay are about defying all odds and the latest release, a cover of "Jamelia" by Caribou, re-imagines the electronic abstract sound of Jamelia as a melancholic slice of clappy dancehall. What does that mean exactly? In true Bonjay fashion, this will be left entirely up to you to define.

Bonjay - Jamelia (Caribou cover)

The Soul-Dancehall duo with indie aesthetics also just released their first mini-album BROUGHTUPSY, available on iTunes in Canada and US as well as available on CD in stores across Canada.

Reminiscin'... YO! MTV Raps

The other day a friend FB'd me a link to a YouTube-clip with Mary J Blige and Grand Puba performing "What's the 411?" live in the YO! MTV Raps studio. The tune is dope, and the performance is awesome... This made me reminisce how I used to watch YO! MTV Raps 1991-1994 to catch up with the latest jams from the states, crackin' up and laughing to the stupid jokes of hosts Dr Dre and Ed Lover, and watching Fab 5 Freddy's (what I at the time thought were quite silly) interviews with the main hip hop artists of those years. Hip hop was hardly played in Swedish radio and it was really difficult to find hip hop albums in the record stores. To get the freshest rap tunes I used to record the YO! MTV Raps shows on VHS, so I then could connect the TV to my HiFi and record the tracks I liked to cassettes and put together hip hop mixtapes. So, let me take you back in time and share some great LIVE moments from this brilliant TV show...

Skills

We're still mourning the death of Guru, so here's The Cosimist's hommage to this hip hop legend:

I used to listen a lot to Gang Starr during the nineties, and when I listen to them again now it's unreal how fresh this stuff still sounds, some of it almost 20 years old. Don't know if it's Dj Premier's hard, contemplative beats or Guru's monotonic, hoarse drone that does it. Anyway, check out these superb Gang Starr/Dj Premier/Guru songs. This is seminal shit!!

Gang Starr - Name tag
Gang Starr - A long way to go
Gang Starr - Mass appeal
Gang Starr feat. K-Ci & Jo-Jo - Royalty
Gang Starr, M.O.P. - BI vs. friendship
Gang Starr - Execution of a chump
Gang Starr - Tonz 'o' gunz
Gang Starr - Take a rest
Gang Starr - No shame in my game
Dream Warriors - I've lost my ignorance
Guru's Jazzmatazz, Donald Byrd - Loungin'
Guru's Jazzmatazz, Branford Marsalis, Chaka Khan - Watch what you say
Guru's Jazzmatazz, Ramsey Lewis, Brian Holt, Bahamadia - Respect the architect
Kreators feat. Guru, Akrobatik, Big Shug, Krumbsnatcha - Home
Big Shug - Counter Punch
Gang Starr - Nice girl, wrong place

Moment Of Truth - RIP Guru

They say it's lonely at the top in whatever you do
You always gotta watch motherfuckers around you
Nobody's invincible no plan is foolproof
We all must meet our moment of truth

Keith 'Guru' Elam (1961-2010)

Since the news about Guru's last journey from planet earth, I've been listening non stop to his music. I've never been a hardcore Gang Starr fan, I don't even have half of the Guru related albums, but I realize that his music always has been in my life since I first discovered the tru essence of hip hop flavor. He was not the illest or most technical lyricist on the mic, but his monotone and always melancholic tone was unique and made a perfect match to Dj Premier's sharp beats filled with jazz, funk and soul. The music of Guru and Gang Starr will always remind me of what hip hop really is about... So here's my humble tribute to this legend, a minimix of my best and most played tracks of Guru and some of his most talented protégés. Rest in peace Guru!

Gang Starr/Guru - Jazz Thing/Intro
Gang Starr - Full Clip
Gang Starr - DWYCK
Gang Starr - Work
Gang Starr (feat. K-Ci & JoJo) - Royalty
Gang Starr - Step In The Arena
Gang Starr - Mass Appeal

Gang Starr - Jazz Thing (Video Mix)
Gang Starr - Lovesick
Jeru The Damaja - Me Or The Papes
Bahamadia - Word Play
Group Home - Supa Star
Gang Starr (feat. Jadakiss) - Rite Where You Stand
Gang Starr - Skillz
Gang Starr - Moment Of Truth

Recordmania!

A quick post to recommend a visit to one of our major sources of inspiration in this obsession of ours that we call music: Recordmania, without a doubt one of the best record dealers of all sorts of black music in this planet. Check also out their recently launched blog, that contains both entertaining and interesting anecdotes from our main Uppsala homie, great friend and owner of Recordmania, Lars Larsson. The blog also features excellent mixes of rare material put together by the Recordmania crew! And if you are in Stockholm you have to visit the Recordmania store - a true vinyl goldmine full of quality nuggets of funk, jazz, soul, hip hop, house, latin, afro and more...

Yes, yes! The Second part of the Prendas Públicas Mix Series compiled by Kompis! Kompis! just got published. This time we focus on dark decadent music for the runway:) Or as Elisabeth Oria puts it "Un mix algo oscuro, femme fatale y bailable luego del catwalk"…

Check it at www.prendaspublicas.com!
