We're still mourning the death of Guru, so here's The Cosimist's hommage to this hip hop legend:

I used to listen a lot to Gang Starr during the nineties, and when I listen to them again now it's unreal how fresh this stuff still sounds, some of it almost 20 years old. Don't know if it's Dj Premier's hard, contemplative beats or Guru's monotonic, hoarse drone that does it. Anyway, check out these superb Gang Starr/Dj Premier/Guru songs. This is seminal shit!!

Moment Of Truth - RIP Guru

They say it's lonely at the top in whatever you do
You always gotta watch motherfuckers around you
Nobody's invincible no plan is foolproof
We all must meet our moment of truth

Keith 'Guru' Elam (1961-2010)

Since the news about Guru's last journey from planet earth, I've been listening non stop to his music. I've never been a hardcore Gang Starr fan, I don't even have half of the Guru related albums, but I realize that his music always has been in my life since I first discovered the tru essence of hip hop flavor. He was not the illest or most technical lyricist on the mic, but his monotone and always melancholic tone was unique and made a perfect match to Dj Premier's sharp beats filled with jazz, funk and soul. The music of Guru and Gang Starr will always remind me of what hip hop really is about... So here's my humble tribute to this legend, a minimix of my best and most played tracks of Guru and some of his most talented protégés. Rest in peace Guru!
