Kompis! Kompis! crate findings in Santiago de Chile, part 7

This is a record I've seen often without finding any interest in until the other day, when I flipped to the back cover and read the tracklisting in detail. There I noticed that the title track is a cover of Paul & Linda McCartney's tune "Let 'em in" - a track I discovered (and liked!) some time ago when I was looking around for some balearic stuff. But what Billy Paul did in his Philly-soul version is indeed of current interest in these Obamaistical times... Paul (we're talking about Billy now) changed the lyrics and gave them a strong political connotation when he all along the tune mixes in portions of famous speeches by leaders of the civil rights movements in USA. Among others I recognize Malcolm X's voice, and of course the whole thing ends with the classic "I have a dream..."-speech of Dr Martin Luther King. By the way, it's the same speech that you can find in a beautiful remix of Fingers Inc. classic "Can you feel it" that Dr Manne used in this K!K!-mixtape. And going on, I can't avoid also mentioning a recent remix of the same track with Obama's victory speech in Chicago. Finally, since I can't let it go - I really love that Fingers Inc. house anthem! - let's end this post faraway but so close to Billy Paul's "Let 'em in" recommending a jazzy treatment of "Can you feel it" performed live by the German band Christian Prommers Drumlesson.

Kompis! Kompis! crate findings in Santiago de Chile, part 6

So what's the fuzz about this 20'th-something version of Jorge Ben's "Mais que nada" that I found the other day digging around in this 34 degrees-Santiago-hell?! Well, to begin with it's Nancy Ames that performs it. A classy lady with an elegant and at the same time strong voice that some of you might know for her outstanding latin album "Latin pulse" with the winner "Carcara". And when it comes to the arrangement (by Stu Phillips), it is without a doubt much more interesting than most of the other covers of this Brazilian anthem - at least among the ones that are part of my collection. What makes the difference in Nancy Ames' version is the nerving vibraphone messing around all along the tune. All and all, I would say that this is one of the two best versions of "Mais que nada", together with Elza Soares completely hilarious dancefloor bomb from 1968.

Random plays or just a big mistake!

Playing this mix at a last weekend's birthday dinner party didn't really end in success but what can one expect when you're asked to do a dj-set for an off-beat rock crowd with no dancing skills what so ever. Almost everything I usually play was excluded days before the party (after a chat with my friend and the actual birthday boy Deniz but as he really asked me to do something I didn't give up). So I ended up with this almost non hiphop-soul-rnb-reggae-funk-latin-&-house mix:) It did not go well at all:) but if you play it before you go out clubbing tonight it can still do some decent work.

Hope you enjoy it!
